5 years ago FROM THE DE SOTO NEWS February 2003 In a move it anticipated would lead to a smooth transition, the De Soto USD 232 Board of Education promoted Sharon Zoellner to replace her longtime mentor, retiring Superintendent Marilyn Layman.

5 years ago FROM THE DE SOTO NEWS January 2003 The De Soto USD 232 Board of Education was nearing a decision in its search of a successor to retiring Superintendent Marilyn Layman. The Board agreed to first look to replace Layman with current district administrators and also had a number of special meetings in January devoted to interviewing applicants and discussing the superintendent opening.

The youngster saw a contest announcement for a chance to design a new children’s game for the University Games Company while on a family vacation to Disneyland in April 2001.

5 years ago FROM THE DE SOTO NEWS January 2003 In his annual State of the City Address, Mayor Dave Anderson said the city was in a good position to make progress in 2003 bolstered by the discovery of at least $1 million in city government coffers. ¢ De Soto High School teacher Scott Sharp was one of 23 teachers honored with the Kansas Horizon Award, established to recognize outstanding first-year K-12 teachers. ¢ Lloyd and Maxine Coker planned to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception, given by their children, Loya Beery and Gayla Hougham, at the De Soto Community Center. ¢ A fire caused an estimated $200,000 at the De Soto home of Doug Rowland when he was working on the plumbing with a torch and apparently got too close to one of the studs.
