The name of the annual late summer community festival was changed back to De Soto Days this year after a three-year run as the Watermelon Festival. The change was made to give organizers more flexibility in developing themes for the parade rather than using the watermelon theme each year, Max Atwell said.

This year’s theme is “American Freedom,” Atwell said..

• The Johnson County Commission’s latest work session on the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant produced little new, but De Soto USD 232 officials attending did get assurances the county would work to ensure the district receive land for future schools.

The work session last Thursday also a produced a call for cooperation, seemingly directed at the city of De Soto.

The school district’s assurances came after the Board of Education directed administrators to write a letter to various officials and elected bodies involved in the transfer process, reminding them of the district’s need for school sites.

The De Soto Board of Education conducted a survey of its district.

Almost two-thirds of De Soto school district patrons and voters indicated they solidly supported a property tax increase to build a new school, but only half said they were willing to raise taxes to raise teachers’ salaries.

• New members named to the De Soto High School drill team were Tina Brown, Monica Setter, Holly Brown, Crystal Ellison, Kristi Hill, Jennie Otto, Keri Roberts, Tracy Spillman, and Joanna Wall. They joined Ginger Brown, Shearon Otto, Tiffany Hewitt, Melanie Lynn, Dana Magerl, Amy Freer, Stacy Lindsey, Stephanie Ogle and Kara Shelton.

May 1967

Several De Soto students were recognized for scoring at least two school years beyond their grade on the SAT test. Those eighth-graders were Donna Raye Asher, Rick Joe Caldwell, Susan Marie Dicken, Roger Jay Moll, Norman Lee Tyler, Ellen Jane Long, Kathleen Sue Sanderson, and Nelda Marlayne Coy.

• In the school election for student council officers, Lonnie Breshears was elected president and Don Williams was elected vice president. The school pep officers elected were LaRinda Barnet, president; Diane Schlagel, vice president; Dorothy Heywood, secretary; JoAnn Gannon, treasurer; Leona Turner, student council representative; and Margaret Whanger, reporter.

• The 4-H Club had a scrap drive throughout the community and sponsored square dancing for the youth of the community on Saturday evenings at the fire station.

May 1961

Orville Crawford was elected president of the De Soto High School Alumni Association. Pharis Cordell was named treasurer, and Betty Hughey, secretary. More than 180 people registered at the third annual event.

• Winston Manning received two honors from the Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia. He was awarded a scholarship for $150 and was selected by the department of physical science at the college as a freshman honor student.

• Dennie Dowell found the diamond ring she thought was lost when she was moving some clothes in a dresser drawer. The ring belonged to Dennie’s mother before it was given to Dennie.

• Melvin Golden did a nice job looking after the flags for the veterans’ graves at the De Soto Cemetery on Memorial Day. Ninety-four flags were placed on graves.

• Eldon Manning received a 20-year certificate and pin from the National Safety Council as a Safe Driver Award for professional driving for the United States Postal Service.
