Word has it that many of Johansen's books are very readable. She must have been having an off-day when she worked this one out.
Rene is a complicated heroine. As a child, she witnessed her mother's death during the burning of the family home, receiving a head-injury herself. Following a long coma she woke with the "gift" of seeing in others' minds. This led to her psychiatric hospitalization.
Now, she is sought after by the highest executive in government to aid in finding and stopping a genius fire-starter who is methodically killing other genius scientists. The guy sent to recruit her shares her "gift" and, in fact, has developed it so that he can actually control the minds of others.
There's a little romance, a little violence, a little murder, family angst:.space prohibits more details. Judge for yourself.
