Lexington Grange No. 94 collected 20 pounds of used Christmas cards to be sent to the St. Jude's Children's Home.
¢ The Kaw Valley Sportsman Association donated to a chapel at Camp Naish, a Boy Scout camp near Bonner Springs.
¢ The Satisfied Seniors met for a potluck dinner. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bowling, Lucile Welch, Edna Caldwell, Bertha Kirby, Dee Richardson, Ruth Buckley, Bessie Weese, Velma Moll, Jennie Siscoe and Aggie Hoffman.

John Mogusar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Mogusar, was one of 14 finalists in he Northeast Kansas Regional Citizen Bee at Woodruff Auditorium at Kansas University. Mogusar received a state medallion and advanced to the state competition in Topeka in June.
Michael Hesser and Geoffrey West were De Soto's other representatives and received certificates of merit. Kathy Reddy was the sponsor.
¢ De Soto students who placed in the Future Business Leaders of America state conference at Emporia State University were Melynda Messer, second, personal finance; Martin Hess, second, real estate; Scott Cunningham, fifth, real estate, and Cindy Weller, fifth, computer programming.
Kelley Taylor, Melynda Messer and Gina Cunningham received "Who's Who in Kansas FBLA" recognition.
Other students participating were G.A. Buie, Jamey Gulley, Sarah Hamilton, Trisha Johnson, Kelley Kobler, Dawn Morse, Jacki Rogers and Kristie Staley.

De Soto Lions Club officers were Wayne Dicken, president; Bud Jenks, first vice president; Calvin Robinson, second vice president; Pat Louthain, third vice president; Tom Davidson, secretary; John Taylor, treasurer; Jim Carpenter, lion tamer; and Chuck Lawhead, tail twister.
Board of directors was Don Gribbon, Roland Ohrenberg, Jack Peck and Tom Davidson.
¢ Teresa Jenks, Sharyle McMillian, Brian Springer and Ken Stewart received I ratings at the state forensics meet at Emporia. Speech and drama students who won II ratings from DHS were Michelle Motzkus, Kim Tate, Vickie Thomas, Teresa Simmons and the one-act pay. The DHS forensics coach was Kimberly McCool.
¢ Countryside Intermediate sixth-grader Shane Shanks was among the student scientists receiving Science Pioneer Awards at the Greater Kansas City Science Fair.
Competing with over 1,500 projects, Shanks won first place in the intermediate physical division. Titled "Effectiveness of Selected Natural Dyes on Plant, Animal and Synthetic Fabrics," the project received an excellent rating, a blue ribbon and an engraved plaque.
¢ Mr. and Mrs. Frank Richardson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a dinner at the Methodist church.

The race for mayor ended in a tie between George Linden and Charles Neeland. City Council winners were Ralph Bowling, Joseph Davis, Harvey Schultz, Wiley Simpson and Leland Toedman. Wayne Icenogle was elected city police judge.?¢ A.O. Sherfey, chiropractor, opened an office in the Lloyd Coker building in the east part of town, west of Rockhill trailer court.?¢ The junior fellowship at the De Soto Baptist Church elected officers for the new quarter. The elected officers were: Lou Ann Bickley, president; Wayne Russel, vice president; Lana Pingleton, secretary; Martha Thorpe, treasurer; Steven Amego, assistant treasurer; Karen Brune, party committee; and Marilyn Mann, Mark Blaine and Linda Osburn, refreshment committee.

An ad for Sunflower Motor Service said, "Ride by bus and save." One-way fare to Kansas City was 70 cents; round trip, $1.25.
¢ An ad for a Lawrence car dealership said, "Fifteen minutes at the wheel of an Essex will convince you that it is the world's greatest buy." Not to be outdone, the Ford Motor Company placed its own ad that read, "For nearly 20 years, the Model T Ford led the motor industry, and it still is used by more people than any other automobile. More than 8 million Model T Fords are in active service today."
