The Zookeeper's Wife

Set in Warsaw during World War II, this story views the Holocaust from a different angle.
Jan and Antonia Zabinski ran the city's zoo before the war. During the war they used their home and the animal quarters to hide over 300 Jews who they helped escape from the Nazi's, giving them animal names and devising a complicated plan of buying food in small portions and establishing a routine to hide people in plain sight.
The author uses beautiful prose to describe relationships between "guests" and the family and between animals and humans. Facts were taken primarily from Antonia's diary and take the reader back in time to the horror that was Warsaw.
