Tennis controls early dual
April 17, 2008
The De Soto boys tennis team - as a team - has looked unstoppable at times this season, but that statement will soon be tested.
Coming off wins against Mill Valley in a Dual, and getting first place at a Bonner Springs tournament, there is no question the team is on a roll right now.
Both singles players, Matt Edwards and Andrew Konetzni finished first at the Bonner Springs tournament, both going undefeated. The No. 1 doubles team of Brendon Hudson and Trevor Elmer finished third, going 3-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Joe Dvorak and Foster Moore took second, going 2-2.
"The singles guys, they're fine and they're going to be fine. If they're going to lose a match they are going to lose to a player that is really good," coach Michael Sullivan said. "The doubles, it's good because they need more experience together. Trevor and Brendon were back to .500 (after Bonner tournament) because they went 3-1 that day."
The reason Dvorak and Moore were able to finish second while losing one more match than Hudson and Elmer is because of the format of the tournament.
Teams first competed in two round-robin pools of four teams. Then the top two teams from each pool met for first and second while the second two played for third and fourth.
Both teams went 2-1 in pool play, but Dvorak and Moore were still the top team in their pool based on a tiebreaker, which consisted of winning percentage with games won versus games played in all three matches.
Dvorak and Moore ended up losing the championship match to end at 2-2.
Hudson and Elmer finished the day at 3-1 after losing to Paola, 4-8, in their first match.
"The one thing I've noticed with them, is they do play better as the day progresses," Sullivan said. "It's like that first match is kind of, they're getting into their rhythm and things like that. They have a chance of playing them (Paola) this weekend."
That would be at Baldwin Saturday, a 10-team tournament. Hudson and Elmer are in the opposite pool from the No. 1 doubles team from Paola, but Sullivan would welcome the rematch.
"Even though they lost that first match, if they play a little better than they played, I think they can beat that team," Sullivan said.
While the doubles teams ran up against a couple of teams that were better than them, there was no one who could compete with Edwards and Konetzni the previous day, April 9. In fact, the two gave up a combined six points in the tournament.
Edwards, playing the No. 1 singles, beat Paola and Baldwin opponents, 8-0, to start the tournament before winning against an Immaculata opponent 8-3. He then handled his Mill Valley opponent in an 8-1 victory.
Konetzni, like Edwards, beat Paola and Baldwin, 8-0, then an Immaculata opponent 8-1. He also faced a Mill Valley opponent in the championship, and handed him an 8-1 loss.
Tuesday in a varsity dual against Mill Valley, De Soto won, 8-1.
It was the third consecutive time the Wildcats beat Mill Valley in dual action.
Elmer, who beat his singles opponent 8-3, said the experience in singles play could help him in doubles.
"It helps with ground strokes (balls hit after the bounce) and serving," Elmer said. "It really doesn't help with volleying (hitting balls pre-bounce) and trying to go to the net."
Next on De Soto's schedule is a dual Thursday with Immaculata before heading to the Baldwin Tournament Saturday.
"Me and Andrew can both win," Edwards said of singles competition at Baldwin. "Depending on how we play, we can both do really good."
