Senior Kristen Glover may not be an athlete, but she has been a member of five De Soto High School sports teams.

She's the one giving the players water, watching the clock during practice and sharing a word or two of encouragement with athletes.

"I'm just the everything get-go girl," she said.

Kristen is a team manager. She managed volleyball four years, boys basketball four years, baseball two years, softball one year and track one year.

"Sometimes I'm at school from 7:50 in the morning to maybe 10 at night," the Lenexa teen said. "It takes dedication."

Although she played basketball and volleyball in middle school, Kristen decided against going out for sports in high school.

"The competitive level started to get higher, and I was not up to competing against other people," she said. "I wanted to help people more than being a student athlete.

"My neighbor just sort of encouraged my to be a manager, he said 'you should do it, it's fun.'"

Constantly managing sports can be demanding on her time, but Kristen said she liked having something to do after school.

"If I went home, I'd be sitting on my couch eating a bag of potato chips," she said.

During seminar, Kristen can be seen zipping through the hallways, often in something that says "De Soto," saying hello to teachers and students.

"I'm friendly with everyone at school," she said.

In order to be a manager, Kristen approached coaches and asked them if they needed help, and just like athletes, she had to have decent grades to get the job.

De Soto High School baseball coach Joel Thaemert said several students apply to be managers, but only a few are selected.

"You try to pick somebody that's responsible, that you can count on, and that will be here every day," he said. "They are more or less a player."

Tod Hessong, who is assistant coach for football, boys basketball and baseball, said he thought Kristen was the only student in the school who managed so many sports.

"She's never missed a home game," he said. "I think she just likes being around the sports and being around the guys and girls during practice, and going on the trips and going to all the games."

Assistant baseball coach Chris Morrison said Kristen helps keep the team running smoothly.

"She's the mortar that holds our foundation together," he said.

On the boys basketball team's Web site, Kristen was listed as " the do all manager," a title given to her by basketball coach Jim Bonar.

"She was always there with anything we needed," he said. "She had her particular job that she did everyday, but she also went well beyond her job description as far as managerial duties. She'd bring us cookies and cakes and cough drops. She was there at Christmas practices."

Although she is very involved in De Soto sports, Kristen also has a passion for working with children. She is a Sunday school teacher at Overland Park Christian Church.

"It's so cool because the kids, they point to me and say 'Mom that's my teacher,'" she said.

After high school, Kristen plans to attend a junior college to start work on an education degree. She hopes to teach kindergarten or preschool.

Bonar said he would remember Kristen as someone who was proud to wear green and white and always wanted her school to be successful.

"She was more than a manager," Bonar said. "She absolutely was an inspiration to the guys because they knew that she cared. She has really left her imprint on De Soto High School."
