- Services for Elmer Leroy Torneden, 83, Lawrence, were held Monday, June 18, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery.

- Easter Sunday came with an extra gift this year for the Rev. Richard Copeland. Near the end of the service, De Soto Baptist Church deacons announced Copeland’s Pastor of the Year nomination and presented him with a winner’s prize certificate and leather-bound Nelson Study Bible.

- The De Soto school board received a report Monday from a district facilities focus group recommending the district build a new middle school, three new elementary schools, additions to three present schools and development of a centrally located complex that would serve needs from athletics to bus maintenance.

- While summertime may mean shedding sweaters and long sleeves, many De Soto High School students say it doesn’t mean shedding responsibilities. In fact, it is common to find students who have traded in their academic obligations for working-world duties. The reason for sacrificing their time is generally agreed upon: summer fun requires summer funds.
